What to Expect

Each week, Alice Alviani, owner of Family Piano, covers a different chapter of The Older Beginner Piano Course by James Bastien. We do ask that you purchase this method book in advance so you can follow along and practice at home.

At the start of each session, we review the previous lesson, outline the current chapter, and demonstrate the exercises with proper technique.

Then everyone goes through the lesson and practices on their own while Alice walks around giving everyone personalized feedback.

A strong emphasis is placed on technique and having fun. The basics of traditional notation will be taught, and “playing by ear” is also discussed for a better understanding of musicality.

We try to keep the class very flexible and custom to your needs. If you’d like to work ahead, you certainly can. And if you need more time on a chapter than others, that’s fine too. Everyone succeeds!

Our Group Piano Class is a fantastic:

  • Supplement to private lessons
  • Opportunity for parents to become more involved with their kid’s learning, and bond through music
  • Refresher course for adults that haven’t played in years

How to Register

We tend to offer the Group Piano Class four times a year. Once you’re ready to sign up, simply call or email us, and we’ll get you enrolled. If you’d like to know when the next semester starts, we can also add you to our pre-registration list.

The Group Piano Class is available to everyone for $149/semester — or free to families who’ve gotten a piano from us. Whether you purchased one or are renting one, you’re able to take it at any time and as many times as you’d like. We even allow you to bring up to 3 other friends or relatives with you at no additional cost.

Due to the more mature nature of the class, we do ask that everyone registered be 15 years of age or older. Upon approval, younger people may join if accompanied by an adult, and able to stay engaged with the class.

Online Lessons

If you’re registered for in-person lessons but need to skip a week, we offer online versions of each class for your convenience.

Zoom sessions are recorded, and we even have videos for the first six units as well. Upon registration, we’ll send you a private playlist so you’re able to revisit lessons as convenient.

For reference, here’s the instructional portion of the first lesson:
